On November 23, Chinese Ambassador Nong Rong and Pakistani Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Imam signed the Protocol of Inspection and Quarantine Requirements for the Export of Onion from Pakistan to China, on behalf of respective governments in Islamabad. Minister Counsellor from Chinese Embassy Xie Guoxiang and Secretary of National Food Security and Research Tahir also attended the signing ceremony.
Ambassador Nong Rong stressed that the signing of this Protocol, which is of great significance, would provide Pakistani onions with access to the Chinese market. At present, the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has entered a new stage of high-quality development, focusing on industry and agriculture cooperation. This protocol is a magnificent start for agriculture cooperation between two countries. In the coming future, China is willing to work with the Pakistani side to speed up inspection and quarantine procedures for agriculture products such as cherries, potatoes, dried peppers, dairy products, etc, accelerate the establishment of Foot and Mouth Disease Free Zone, advance the high-quality development of the construction of CPEC in accordance with the important consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, and build a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era.
Imam highly praised this Protocol, saying that the signing of the Protocol would bring a huge untapped market for Pakistani onion exporters and benefited a great number of farmers, which is also a concrete example of the high-quality development of the CPEC. China has always been an important export destination for Pakistani agriculture products, especially rice. Pakistani side would further strengthen agriculture cooperation with China in scientific research and personnel training, so as to facilitate more high-quality agriculture products such as mangoes, oranges, cherries, dairy products, beef and mutton products entering the Chinese market and push forward the steady progress of China-Pakistan agriculture cooperation.
